In Memoriam: Ann Baile Hamric
The LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing community was saddened to hear of Dr. Hamric’s passing on February 9. The internationally renowned leader in advanced practice nursing and nursing ethics served as an associate professor at the School of Nursing for four years and, during her time here, testified before the Louisiana Legislature advocating increased medical privileges for advanced practice nurses. Dr. Hamric was the senior editor of the definitive textbook on advanced practice nursing in 1997 – now in its 6th edition – which helped to define the emerging roles of nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists and clinical nurse specialists. Her extensive research on moral distress in health care professionals broke new ground in biomedical ethics, and her 37 publications continue to be widely cited.
