In Memoriam
Elizabeth A. Humphrey, EdD, RN
1941–2021
LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing notes the passing of Elizabeth A. Humphrey, EdD, RN, former Helen A. and James B. Dunn Professor and Dean of the School of Nursing from 1997 to 2007.
Dr. Humphrey joined the school in 1975. During her tenure as dean, she restructured the School of Nursing, establishing an Office of Nursing Research and Evaluation. She also developed a Master of Nursing specialization in nurse anesthesia, implemented the RN to BSN program of study, and provided leadership for the planning of advanced practice nursing programs. Her programs focused on interests including primary health care, care of mothers and children, and the education of nurses, nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists. Two professorships in nursing were also established during her tenure, the P. K. Scheerle, Professorship in Nursing and the Tenet Health System/Jo Ellen Smith, BSN Endowed Chair for Nursing Research.
Dr. Humphrey guided the School of Nursing during its temporary relocation to Baton Rouge in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, finding classrooms for the school’s 571 students so their training could continue with minimal interruption. She secured temporary sites around Baton Rouge, and because of her determination, classwork resumed within a month after the storm, and graduations in December and May occurred on time.
Dr. Humphrey received several honors and scholarships throughout her professional career, including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Fellowship in Primary Care and the LSU Medical Center Foundation Searle Award for Excellence in Research, Education and Patient Care. In 1997, she was named the Louisiana State Nurses Association Nurse Practitioner of the Year. In 2004, she was named the Louisiana State Nurses Association Nursing School Administrator of the Year and inducted into the Louisiana State Nurses Association Hall of Fame.
Demetrius J. Porche, DNS, PhD, PCC, ANEF, FACHE, FAANP, FAAN, who succeeded Dr. Humphrey as dean of the School of Nursing, praised her determination and quiet competence. “She always was the picture of professionalism. She didn’t have to be a confrontational person who had to get loud and angry. She was always polite, and she consistently moved her agenda forward. She always cared about people and throughout her career she maintained an abiding joy in women’s health,” he says.
Dr. Humphrey died on March 8, 2021, at her home in Augusta, Maine, where she had moved after retiring in 2007. She was 80.
The Administrative Council of the LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing issued a resolution in her honor. Fundraising efforts are underway to establish an endowed professorship, develop an undergraduate student award for maternal-child health, and graduate student awards in the Nurse Anesthesia and Nurse Practitioner programs in her name.
