Giving Hope to the Community
During the week of March 8, 2021, seniors in the BSN class volunteered at Giving Hope Food Bank, to help our community in the New Orleans East area. The Giving Hope Food Bank was established in 2013 and has now grown to provide almost 200,000 hot meals to low-income seniors and over 1.7 million pounds of groceries to low-income families each year.
Award-Winning Effort
Congratulations to Alyssa Allsop, Neonatal Nurse Practitioner DNP student, for receiving the “Best Student Poster” award during the Spring 2021 Virtual Academy of Neonatal Nursing Advanced Practice and Low Risk Neonatal Nursing Conference. Alyssa is also one of 10 recipients of the Mead Johnson Nutrition Scholarship and will graduate in May 2021 from the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner DNP program.
A Heart for Nursing and Advocacy
Max Oertling, a Senior 1 BSN student, was born with multiple heart defects and received a heart transplant when he was 1 year old. Now, as a 23-year-old nursing student, he gives back by volunteering with the American Heart Association. He also wants to raise awareness for all young people like him with preexisting health conditions to get a COVID-19 vaccination. After seeing so much loss this past year in people with overall poor health, his other mission is to encourage everyone to make getting vaccinated a priority. He plans to work in an ICU after graduation in December.
This Is Public Health
Students in the Population Focused Nursing Practicum participated in a national program called the This Is Public Health Sticker Campaign, which was created by the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH). As part of the program, students go into the community and take pictures of their version of public health to help raise awareness of the many factors that influence public health. Under the direction and support of Khaleelah Hasan, MN, RN; Adele Harrell, MSN, RN; Karen Smith, RN; Tracie Gravolet, Director of Student Affairs; Marco Sosa, BS, IT Project Coordinator; and the course faculty, the students collected their images into a display titled Population Focused Nursing Wall of Fame, now hosted on the Nursing Skills and technology Center website.
