In nursing, wellness is more than a concept. It is the foundation of compassionate care and sustained excellence. At our School of Nursing, we recognize that to prepare nurses who lead with skill and empathy, we must nurture the well-being of the whole person: body, mind and spirit.
Our “Be Well: Student Success and Wellness” initiative continues to strengthen that foundation, empowering students to develop resilience, self-awareness and balance as they pursue their professional goals. Through this initiative and its many connected efforts, our school has become a model for integrating wellness into nursing education, equipping students not only to thrive academically, but also to carry a culture of wellness into the communities they will serve.
Across our campus, this holistic approach is taking shape in meaningful ways. The Campus Assistance Program (CAP) has expanded its reach and services, ensuring that every member of our community has access to mental health support and financial wellness tools. Our Academic Success Coordinators work side by side with students to strengthen both learning strategies and self-care practices, reinforcing that academic success and emotional well-being are inseparable.
Wellness at our school also extends to the physical and spiritual dimensions of health. Through initiatives that encourage movement, mindfulness and self-reflection, we remind students and faculty alike that small steps can have a lasting impact, be it a walk between classes, a moment of quiet in our Prayer and Meditation Room or a conversation that reconnects us to purpose. These moments of care sustain us as individuals and strengthen our capacity to care for others.
Our commitment to wellness also mirrors our commitment to innovation. At national gatherings like the APNA Annual Conference, our faculty engage with thought leaders shaping the future of nursing education and mental health care. Their insights help us continually refine our teaching, expand our simulation experiences and support the next generation of nurses who are empowered to innovate and collaborate for care excellence.
Every aspect of wellness contributes to the success of our students and the strength of our profession. By fostering a culture that values well-being as deeply as it values knowledge, we are preparing nurses who can sustain themselves and uplift others throughout their careers.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to our dedicated faculty, staff, students and partners whose efforts make this culture of care possible. Together, we are building not only a healthier learning environment, but also a healthier Louisiana – one nurse, one patient and one act of wellness at a time.
