At the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Nursing, student organizations are more than extracurriculars: They’re leadership incubators, service hubs and sources of lasting connection. Here’s a look at what our dynamic student groups were up to in the Spring 2025 semester.
Student Government Association (SGA)
From welcome-back celebrations to formal events, SGA has been busy creating inclusive and memorable student experiences. These large-scale events not only brought the student body together but also raised significant funds for student initiatives. SGA is currently leading the charge to coordinate the Louisiana Association of Student Nurses’ first post-COVID convention, an enormous collaborative effort aimed at reuniting nursing students statewide and reconnecting with professional partners.
Student Nurses Association (SNA)
SNA members have shown an inspiring commitment to service, volunteering with Green Light New Orleans, Farming New Orleans, Second Harvest Food Bank and Animal Rescue New Orleans, and hosting a Hygiene Drive benefiting local schools. Our SNA chapter won the LSNA 2025 Leading the Way Award for outstanding chapter leadership and represented LSU at the NSNA Annual Convention in Seattle, where members participated in NCLEX prep, networking events and leadership sessions.
Student Veterans of America (SVA)
SVA continues to support veterans and active service members through fundraising, fitness and community outreach. In Spring 2025, SVA members hosted a Hero Workout event with Krewe Fitness, organized donation drives for deployed soldiers and held SVA’s annual Easter Egg Sale and Hunt, offering customized baskets and yard egging services. All proceeds support SVA’s mission of advocacy and community building.
Men in Nursing Organization (MNO)
Under the leadership of President Stephen Douglass, MNO is launching a trailblazing initiative to support undergraduate students, especially first-generation students, on their journey toward advanced nursing roles. The group is tackling the “information desert” with resume templates, interview tips and recommendation letter guidance. Upcoming plans also include a mentorship program and signature events like the popular Powderpuff Tournament, co-hosted with the Student Government Association.
Sigma Theta Tau International, Epsilon Nu-at-Large Chapter
The Epsilon Nu-at-Large Chapter hosted the Region 6 Research Day on the New Orleans campus, with the current Sigma Theat Tau International president as the event’s keynote speaker. In May, the honor society welcomed the first group of Off-Campus Instructional Site (OCIS) Shreveport students in a meaningful induction ceremony that celebrates excellence in nursing scholarship and leadership.
Doctoral Nursing Student Organization (DNSO)
DNSO continues to foster a collaborative and scholarly community among students in the Doctor of Nursing Science and PhD programs. Through peer interaction, faculty engagement and administrative dialogue, this group strengthens members’ academic experience and promotes professional growth.
Student Engagement Association (SEA)
SEA remains a cornerstone of campus life, connecting students with engagement opportunities and enriching the student experience through ongoing support and service, including Valentine’s candy grams, the Living Wax Museum and other service opportunities.
